the black of obsidian, the white of pumice stone

In addition to benefiting from the fervent summer tourist activity, for years the island of Lipari has relied on the extraction of two rocks, the black obsidian and the pumice stone. A true contrast, unique in the world and fascinating, clearly visible even during a simple walk. Obsidian owes its colour to the basic composition of the magma from which it is produced. Pumice, on the other hand, owes its colour to acidity and is the result of strong gaseous eruptions with rapid evaporation: all this contributes to giving the stone its characteristic porosity. The extraction of the two rocks on the island of Lipari began in the fifth millennium BC, in line with the first documented settlements
