In Reggio Calabria, ancient tradition has it that there should be 13 courses at the Christmas Eve dinner, from appetizer to dessert. The number is not chosen by chance. It is symbolic, in fact, because there were 13 Apostles at Jesus’ Last Supper.
Despite the numerous variations, there are some "fundamental" dishes. The main ones are spaghetti with toasted breadcrumbs or anchovies, broccoli, cod, fennel, fried pumpkin and fritters, deep-fried dough balls and fish balls. Not to mention the cullurialli, or zeppole, as these savoury fried doghnuts are also known. Simple, popular and essential dishes, but with exceptional flavours.
In short, a true ceremony, an intertwining of the sacred and the secular that celebrates the birth of Jesus Christ and that has also become a leitmotif for some local restaurants.
