The Castello del Mare is 32 metres high with four overlapping floors. Tradition has it that the Colombaia was built by the Trojans, who arrived in Trapani after the conquest of Troy. Certainly during the Carthaginian dominion the building was already complete, and in fact Amilcare Barca built a military barracks near it during the first Punic war. In 249 B.C. a very important battle against the Carthaginians was fought near the Colombaia, resulting in it falling into the hands of the Romans before passing back again to the Carthaginians. In the nineteenth century it became, instead, a Bourbon prison which was later abandoned with the construction of the San Giuliano prison.
