mondello and sferracavallo
Between their soft inlets, the gulfs of Mondello and Sferracavallo enclose the Capo Gallo nature reserve, the second most important reserve in the Palermo area after the more famous Monte Pellegrino one. The coastal side of the Capo Gallo Reserve extends from the cape of the same name westward to Punta Barcarello . The rocks, shaped by sea currents, form a series of fascinating caves, such as the Grotta dell'olio. These caves were inhabited by man, who embellished them with graffiti and many archaeological finds have been discovered in these caverns. They are not easy to access because you have to approach the caves directly from the sea.
