la vampa di san giuseppe
Religious holidays in Palermo, but also throughout Sicily, are always accompanied by a huge mobilazation of people and food, including those sharing food as per their characteristic tradition of generosity. March is the month of Saint Joseph, who is remembered with the feast of the “seven dishes” or the “virginedde”, young girls dressed in white, and the “Saint Joseph’s bonfire”. At Torretta steaming plates of homemade pasta are handed out, served with seven different ingredients: beans, lentils, chickpeas and broccoli, cabbage, wild fennel and borage. Preparation of the event takes days, leading up to the feast on the 19th March, and involves the whole town along with some willing tourists.
