The wild island of mouflons, the undisputed kings
Marettimo, more than the other islands of the archipelago, has allowed (thanks to its ge-netic isolation) to the survival of ancient species, which nowadays You cannot find any-where else. To give an example, the island is the nesting site of the second Mediterranean colony of storms birds and of the rare Bonelli eagle. The name Marettimo derives from the union of what characterises it most: the sea and the thyme. It is known to be the land of the mouflons characterised by their big spiral horns which You could meet while trekking on the ancient routes that once allowed to go across the all length of the wild island.
