the neapolitan nativity
Christmas in Naples includes a remarkable tradition of Nativity scenes which can be truly original. Every year new figurines of every size and depicting people who have somehow made a mark on the history of the city are added, whether they are good or bad, ridiculous or grotesque, each seems to have acquired the right to be present at this proud event par excellence. This tradition originated in the classical era when terracotta figurines were needed as votive offerings for the goddess Ceres. Today, the Neapolitan Nativity scene artisans have their workshops on Via San Gregorio Armeno.
