THE HISTORTY AND THE DAMMUSI
Pantelleria and and its stone
The first populations who have inhabited the island, has managed to use the raw material it comprises: the stone.
Here were found real and proper monumental jewels, such as famous “dammusi”, and not only. The building ability are testified by “sesi”, funerary monuments of elliptical shape, almost six metres high and characterized by different heights floors. Built with a technique called “casciata”, they can be dome-shaped or truncated-cone shaped. They may have numerous entries in which it is possible to get inside on all fours, through a long corridor from which one accesses to the cells. Inside every cell it was located a deceased person in foetal position (legs drawn up), with the head turned toward the West. Not far from the city of the Dead, the Village of Cimila (seaweed’s cove) is protected by fortified city walls and it is wonder because primitive population did not have proper instruments.
