THE MAGIC OF THE ISLAND
Flora and vegetation that enchants
Ustica is an enchanting place: especially its sea reserve, that hosts different species, such as corals and sea roses, lobsters, sponges, and parrotfishes, and the beauty of the landscape and its naturalistic routes, this island keeps impressing who observes it. However not everybody is aware of the fact that the island is a magic place: according to the Greeks the sorceress Circe was living there, the main female character of the book of Omero, Odyssey. Circe had lots of knowledge on the therapeutic or poisonous properties of herbs and roots, of which the island is still rich in, such as the “statica di Boccone”, or the “camomilla costiera intermedia”, endemic species of Ustica and of north-west coast of Sicily, the “spinella” (that in the past fed the soap and glass market), the “lentisco” plants (useful in ancient times for the production of oil for the illumination), the bushes of “bianco spino”, of “pero mandolino” and of wild rose. Nowadays You can still feel the magic atmosphere!
