The ancient grains

The countryside of Agrigento is one of the three most cultivated arable lands in Sicily and there was a time when this region was known as the bread basket of Europe. The decrease of the cultivation of grains obviously has economic reasons. Thanks to modified grains in the laboratory, which have a higher yield, they lost their merit and therefore also their value, and so cultivating them became counterproductive. In the last few years, however, those who have kept the seeds of the ancient native grains, have benefited from the spotlight of international interest on their production. It is the reawakening of regional pride that resurrects the Timilìa, the Perciasacchi, the Rossello, the Mallorca and the Senatore Cappelli: all grains with nutritional value and genuine organoleptic properties.
