The city castle
In the Punic trench at the intersection of its two arms lies the castle of Norman origin. A trapezoid fortress enriched by different styles, the original building was remodeled and renovated by the Swabians. The main city streets all meander off from the square in front of the castle and from there the historic centre of the city developed. It was a structure designed for defence purposes and to guard the prisoners, and today the area in front is occupied by Marsala’s district prison.
