The ultimate retreat
You often hear it mentioned on the national and international news as the first port of call for many unfortunate refugees seeking help, and it seems that Lampedusa was placed there, between Europe and Africa, as a comforting refuge. In fact it is also on Lampedusa that the loggerhead sea turtles, an endangered species protected by several associations that deal with the preservation of the species, also find help and safety. There is a recovery centre for the turtles on the island that is promoted and sustained by the WWF and which attracts and involves the will and commitment of so many young people in environmental projects. Many volunteers are dedicated to the protection of this animal, enjoying the exciting spectacle of eggs that crack open after hours and hours of watching over them.
